Concepting-ness

I decided to go with concept 4 from the last post I did - the overhead game play. I feel this gives more options for game play and helps to see everything on screen.

Score: Collecting good foods will increase the current score while gathering Bad foods will lower it.
Strawberry/Chocolate: Will increase/decrease score respectively
Lives: Should the player run out of these the game is over. Collecting Teddy Bears will give one extra life. The mechanic to how you lose lives is yet to be figured out.
Teddy Bear: Gives an extra life.
Hedgehog: The player. Moving the Hedgehog over an object/item will pick it up automatically.

The game play would be to simply gain as much points as possible without losing all your lives (similar goal to games such as Temple Run)

Hey there mister grumpy gills
Mock up of Game Over screen - will have the score shown here too (didn't show up here for some reason)

Gameplay ideas

Here's a couple of rough doodles of possible gameplay.
1 - simple platform game inspired by several games including Mario, Sonic and several others.
2 - One screen styled play where the hedgehog would move right and left to catch falling items and avoid dangerous foods.
3 - Similar to 2 but food and items fly from the right to the left with the hedgehog moving up and down
4 - Overhead view similar to that of the Snake games with food and items randomly appearing on the screen (my personal favorite as of now)

 Some items in the game:
Foods
Good: Top row (Strawberry, Carrot, Banana, Chicken)
Bad: Bottom row (Rasins, Lemon, Chocolate, Fish)

The teddy would act as an extra life in the game

Hedgies

Of course, being that my game is based on hedgehogs i'm going to need them in there. I started to draw a bunch of basic, simple poses to get a better idea of style.
The poses include curling up into a ball (their defence mechanism), running in a wheel (my sister's hedgehog Thumbelina does this to keep fit, only reasonable that others do too) as well as the simple standing around with doodles from most angles.

I chose the best three doodles and neatened them up a bit. From these three I chose the first one to colour in similar to Thumbelina (I have learned that she has a condition called Leucism, which is albinism without the giveaway red eyes and often creamier looking appearance rather than white)

Researchings

I am to create a concept for a 2D video game. I have chosen to work alone and to create it for the iPhone and iPad.
Pictures taken by my sister Hen
I want to base my game around little hedgehogs, as my sister received an African Pygmy Hedgehog for Christmas called Thumbelina.

African Pygmy Hedgehogs do not go into hibernation, as doing so can cause them to die. My sister has her on a diet of Meal Worms and cat food.

My sisters Hedgehog, as we've been told, has a small hint of Albino. This is probably why she's so much more blonde than the average African Pygmy

I can learn more about the African Pygmy Hedgehog from several sites but for now I found this one to be helpful: http://www.hellohedgehog.com/

By learning more about these hedgehogs I can create a game that is accurate and fun

Foods which are good and bad - these can help for a health or point system to be implemented into the game at a later stage
Now that I have a reasonable amount of research to start me off, I shall start concepting my little Hedgehog Character
